Having the chance to investigate an area of my own choosing, I was immediately drawn to immigrant narratives and perspectives in the US—particularly because of the current tumultuous political and media landscape. It seems that more often than not the different media sources that report on immigrant stories resort to sensationalism, seldom allowing their actual voices to be heard.

With my research partner, Anjali Nair, we have taken a deeper look into how immigrants form their own identities as ‘aliens’ in the country they call home. We used our own first-hand experiences as first generation immigrants, from Asia and Latin America respectively, finding similarities in the values that inform our own identities as well those of family and friends, and moving forward by investigating these areas of commonality.
